Claude Code has two types of background execution:
Cloud (& prefix): With & research X the task gets sent to Claude Code on the Web. Runs autonomously in the cloud, even after closing the terminal. Ideal for longer research or complex refactorings.
Local (Ctrl+B): Press Ctrl+B after a bash command. The process continues running locally in the background. Perfect for dev servers, test suites, or builds.
Check status of both with /tasks.
